TL;DR: Meritz Securities and Ripple will explore custody and tokenisation within current Korean securities regulations before considering broader expansion.
South Korean securities firms are preparing for a wider digital asset market, but infrastructure choices are being made before many proposed services become available. Ripple’s October 14 agreement with Meritz Securities focuses initially on custody and tokenisation technology for regulated capital-markets activity.
The companies say they will explore Ripple Custody and associated infrastructure within Meritz’s existing permissions, expanding cooperation in stages as Korea’s rules develop. Meritz is also considering opportunities in spot ETFs, fractional investments, security tokens and won-linked stablecoins. Those ambitions are not all products launched under this agreement.
Custody is a logical starting point. A broker cannot credibly offer tokenised securities unless it can safeguard assets, impose internal approval rules and show auditors what happened to client holdings. Korean financial institutions are particularly sensitive to keeping those processes inside a regulated operating model.
The agreement is Ripple’s first with a Korean securities firm, according to the announcement, following relationships across other parts of the country’s financial industry. Investors should read it as an infrastructure partnership rather than evidence of immediate XRP trading volume. The commercial test lies in which services Meritz eventually introduces and whether the technology is adopted beyond exploratory work.
